Gauss
Software for changing your screen brightness. It is aimed mainly at FPS gamers; adjusting the setting makes dark areas easier to see, as shown in the images below. Strictly speaking it does not change the brightness itself: it remaps only the dark color range of the screen to brighter colors, making relatively dark areas more visible without changing the monitor's brightness at all (this is called gamma adjustment).

Usage
On launch it sits in the system tray and stays there, waiting. Left-clicking the icon opens the "overall gamma adjustment" dialog (pictured below); right-clicking opens the settings menu.
The right-click menu holds the following entries:
- "Adjust (monitor name)" … Shown only in multi-monitor setups, one entry per monitor. Opens a dialog for adjusting the gamma of that monitor alone
- Adjust all … Opens the "overall gamma adjustment" dialog, which applies a common gamma to every monitor (same as left-clicking)
- Reset … Restores the overall gamma and the per-R/G/B gamma to their initial state
- Key settings … Changes the keyboard shortcut assignments. Press the "Set" button next to "Brighten", "Darken" or "Reset", then press the key you want, and that key is assigned. "Default" restores the default assignments
- Exit … Quits the application
In the "overall gamma adjustment" dialog you can set the overall gamma with the slider or by typing a number, and adjust R/G/B individually in the "per-RGB" section. The "Create shortcut" button puts a shortcut on your desktop with the current settings saved in it, so from then on a double-click switches straight back to the same settings.
The settings dialogs are placed near the mouse cursor, so the mouse has as little distance to travel as possible.
